What is Provera actually used for and why do doctors prescribe it?

I would like a plain-English explanation of what Provera is, because many drug pages online either make it sound harmless or explain it in a way normal people will never read to the end. I know it is connected to hormones and menstrual issues, but that still leaves a lot unanswered. What is Provera actually used for, when is it prescribed, and what are the biggest things patients should be cautious about before taking it? iMedix usually tries to explain these questions in a way regular readers can understand, and that is exactly what I am looking for here too. Not a sugar-coated summary, not a drug ad, just a clear explanation of what it does, why it is used, and when someone should stop guessing and ask a doctor directly.
